A poorly managed BOM is the most common cause of PCBA project delays. Component shortages, incorrect specifications, and missing alternatives can halt production for days or weeks. A production-ready BOM includes: reference designator, component description, manufacturer name, manufacturer part number (MPN), quantity per board, and at least one approved alternative MPN. Each of these fields serves a specific purpose in the manufacturing process.
The manufacturer part number is the most critical field. Generic descriptions are insufficient for production. '100nF 0402 capacitor' could refer to hundreds of different parts with different voltage ratings, temperature coefficients, dielectric types, and tolerances. Specify the exact MPN you've designed and tested with.
Including approved alternative MPNs in your BOM is one of the most valuable things you can do to reduce supply chain risk. When your primary component is out of stock or has an unacceptable lead time, your manufacturer can substitute an approved alternative without stopping production.
When specifying alternatives, verify that they are truly drop-in replacements: same package, same electrical specifications, same or better quality grade, and tested to work in your application. Don't list alternatives you haven't verified.
Identify long-lead-time components early in your design process. Microcontrollers, FPGAs, certain sensors, and specialized ICs can have lead times of 20–52 weeks during supply chain disruptions. If your design includes any of these, order them early — before your PCB layout is even complete.
A good PCBA manufacturer will review your BOM before production and flag potential issues: unavailable components, components approaching end-of-life, components with long lead times, and components where the specification is ambiguous.
