PCB Assembly Functional Testing Services

ICT, flying probe, AOI, X-ray, and custom functional test (FCT) to verify every assembled board meets your performance specifications before shipment.

Comprehensive Test Coverage

Kingdta offers a full range of electrical and functional testing services to ensure zero-defect shipments. We work with you to develop test strategies that match your quality requirements and production volume.

In-Circuit Test (ICT)

Bed-of-nails or flying probe testing verifies component values, placement, and solder joint continuity without powering the board.

Flying Probe Test

No-fixture electrical testing for prototypes and small batches. Tests opens, shorts, resistance, capacitance, and diode orientation.

Functional Circuit Test (FCT)

Custom test fixtures power the assembled board and verify functional operation against your test specification.

Automated Optical Inspection (AOI)

100% automated visual inspection of solder joints, component placement, polarity, and missing components after reflow.

X-Ray Inspection

BGA, QFN, and LGA solder joint inspection using 2D/3D X-ray to detect hidden defects invisible to optical inspection.

Burn-In Testing

Extended operation at elevated temperature to screen for early-life failures before shipment.

Custom FCT Fixture Development

For production orders, Kingdta develops custom functional test fixtures that power your assembled board and verify operation against your test specification. FCT fixtures are developed by our engineering team based on your test requirements, schematic, and test point layout.

FCT fixtures are amortized over the production run and owned by the customer. We maintain fixtures in our facility for repeat orders and can update test firmware when your product firmware changes.

  • Test specification development support
  • Custom fixture hardware design
  • Test software development (Python/LabVIEW)
  • Test result logging and traceability
  • Fixture maintenance and calibration

Customer Case Study — Industrial Automation

Custom Functional Test Fixture for a Motor Drive Controller

A German industrial automation company manufacturing a 3-phase motor drive controller — requiring functional testing of all 12 power output channels, CAN bus communication, and over-temperature protection at 2,000 units/year.

The Problem

The customer's existing functional test was a manual bench test requiring an operator to connect a motor load simulator, run a test script, and record results manually. The test took 8 minutes per board and had a 3% false-fail rate due to inconsistent probe contact. At 2,000 units/year, this consumed 267 operator-hours and generated 60 false-fail rework events per year.

Key Challenges

  • 12 power output channels requiring simultaneous load testing at up to 10A per channel
  • CAN bus communication test — requires a CAN bus master to simulate the host controller
  • Over-temperature protection test — requires controlled thermal stimulus to trigger the protection circuit
  • 3% false-fail rate from manual probe contact — generating unnecessary rework
  • Test results must be stored in a database for ISO 9001 traceability

Our Solution

We designed and built a custom functional test fixture using a spring-loaded pogo pin bed-of-nails interface that eliminates probe contact variability. The fixture includes a 12-channel electronic load (0–10A per channel), a CAN bus master interface, and a controlled-temperature thermal chamber for the over-temperature protection test. Test software runs automatically from board insertion to pass/fail result in 2.5 minutes. All test results are automatically logged to a database with board serial number, test date, and individual channel results.

Results & Outcomes

Test time reduced from 8 minutes to 2.5 minutes per board — operator-hours saved: 183 hours/year
False-fail rate reduced from 3% to 0.1% — false-fail rework events reduced from 60 to 2 per year
100% automated test result logging — ISO 9001 traceability achieved without manual data entry
Test fixture ROI achieved in 7 months through operator time savings

"The functional test fixture Kingdta built for our motor drive controller eliminated our biggest quality bottleneck. The false-fail rate dropped from 3% to essentially zero, and the automated logging means we have complete test traceability for every board without any manual effort. The fixture paid for itself in under a year."
