The Short Answer
PCB fabrication is the process of manufacturing the bare circuit board — the laminated substrate with copper traces, vias, solder mask, and silkscreen, but no components. PCB assembly (PCBA) is the process of soldering electronic components onto the fabricated bare board to create a functional electronic assembly.
Both processes are required to produce a working electronic product. They can be performed by the same manufacturer (a one-stop or turnkey service) or by different suppliers.
PCB Fabrication: What Happens
PCB fabrication transforms your Gerber files into a physical bare board. The key process steps are:
- CAM preparation: The manufacturer's CAM engineers verify your Gerber files, add panelisation, and prepare the production data.
- Inner layer imaging: For multilayer boards, inner copper layers are imaged using photolithography and etched to form the copper traces.
- Lamination: Inner layers are bonded together with prepreg (glass-fibre/epoxy material) under heat and pressure.
- Drilling: CNC drilling creates through-holes and vias. Laser drilling is used for microvias in HDI boards.
- Plating: Holes are copper-plated to create electrical connections between layers (PTH — Plated Through Holes).
- Outer layer imaging and etching: The outer copper layers are imaged and etched.
- Solder mask application: A polymer coating is applied over the copper to prevent solder bridges during assembly.
- Surface finish: HASL, ENIG, OSP, or other finishes are applied to exposed copper pads to prevent oxidation.
- Silkscreen: Component reference designators and polarity markers are printed.
- Electrical test: A flying probe or bed-of-nails test verifies continuity and isolation of all nets.
The output is a bare PCB — a physical board with no components, ready for assembly.
PCB Assembly: What Happens
PCB assembly transforms the bare board and a set of electronic components into a functional assembly. The key process steps for SMT assembly are:
- Solder paste printing: A stencil (manufactured from your paste mask Gerber) is used to apply solder paste to the component pads.
- SPI (Solder Paste Inspection): An automated system verifies paste volume and position before component placement.
- SMT component placement: Pick-and-place machines place components onto the pasted pads at speeds of up to 100,000 placements per hour.
- Reflow soldering: The board passes through a reflow oven with a controlled temperature profile. The solder paste melts and forms solder joints.
- AOI (Automated Optical Inspection): Cameras inspect every solder joint for defects.
- Through-hole insertion and wave/selective soldering (if applicable).
- X-ray inspection (for BGA and other hidden joints).
- Functional test (if specified).
