How to Choose a PCB Assembly Manufacturer: 10-Point Checklist

Why Manufacturer Selection Matters
Your PCB assembly manufacturer is a critical supply-chain partner. A poor choice leads to quality escapes, missed deadlines, and costly rework. A good choice delivers consistent quality, transparent communication, and a long-term relationship that improves with every order. This checklist helps you evaluate manufacturers systematically before committing.
The 10-Point Evaluation Checklist
ISO 9001:2015 Certification
ISO 9001 is the minimum quality management system certification for a serious manufacturer. Verify the certificate is current (not expired) and covers the scope of PCB assembly. Ask for the certificate number and verify it with the issuing body. Kingdta has held ISO 9001:2015 certification since 2011.
IPC-A-610 Workmanship Standard
Ask whether the manufacturer's operators and inspectors are IPC-A-610 certified (CIS — Certified IPC Specialist). A manufacturer claiming IPC compliance without certified personnel is a red flag. Confirm which class (Class 2 or Class 3) they are certified for.
SMT Equipment and Capability
Ask about the number and model of SMT lines, minimum component size (01005 capability), maximum board size, and BGA pitch capability. A manufacturer with Yamaha, Fuji, or Panasonic pick-and-place machines and a modern SPI (Solder Paste Inspection) system is equipped for high-complexity work.
Inspection and Test Equipment
Minimum requirements: AOI (Automated Optical Inspection) after reflow, and X-ray capability for BGA inspection. Additional value: SPI before reflow, ICT (In-Circuit Test) fixtures, functional test capability. Ask for photos of their inspection equipment.
Component Sourcing and BOM Management
For turnkey assembly, ask how they source components. Authorised distributors (Digi-Key, Mouser, Arrow, Avnet) are preferable to spot-market brokers for critical components. Ask about their counterfeit component prevention process — this is especially important for ICs.
Traceability System
A proper MES (Manufacturing Execution System) should record component lot numbers, solder paste lot, reflow profiles, and inspection results for every board. This is essential for Class 3 applications and increasingly expected for Class 2. Ask for a sample traceability report.
Communication and Engineering Support
Before placing an order, send a test inquiry with a complex BOM. Evaluate response time (should be under 24 hours), the quality of the DFM feedback, and whether the engineer understands your design. Poor pre-sales communication predicts poor production communication.
Lead Time and Capacity
Ask for standard and expedited lead times. Verify they have capacity for your order size — a manufacturer optimised for 10,000-piece runs may not prioritise your 50-piece prototype. Ask about their queue and whether they have dedicated prototype lines.
References and Case Studies
Ask for references from customers in your industry (medical, automotive, consumer electronics). A manufacturer with documented case studies in your sector has relevant experience. Check independent review platforms (Trustpilot, Google Reviews) for patterns in feedback.
Pricing Transparency
A trustworthy manufacturer provides itemised quotes showing board fabrication, component cost, assembly labour, and test costs separately. Opaque lump-sum quotes make it impossible to identify cost drivers or compare quotes fairly.
