Schematic Design for a Multi-Protocol Industrial Gateway

A Dutch industrial automation company needing a schematic design for a DIN-rail mounted industrial IoT gateway — integrating Modbus RTU, PROFIBUS, EtherNet/IP, and LTE-M connectivity in a single device for retrofitting legacy factory equipment.

The Problem

The customer's in-house electrical engineer had defined the system architecture and selected key ICs but lacked bandwidth to complete the schematic capture for a 4-protocol device. The schematic required careful power domain isolation between the industrial protocol interfaces (24V logic) and the main processor domain (3.3V), plus TVS diode protection on all industrial-facing I/O.

Our Solution

Our schematic team completed the full schematic capture in 12 working days. We used ISO7241 quad-channel digital isolators for the RS-485 and PROFIBUS interfaces, providing 2500V RMS galvanic isolation. The EtherNet/IP interface uses a Microchip LAN9252 controller with integrated magnetics. The LTE-M antenna matching network was designed using the SIM7080G reference design with component values verified against our RF simulation. All 12 industrial I/O pins are protected with PRTR5V0U2X TVS arrays. The schematic was delivered with a full BOM, net list, and a 4-page design review document explaining every protection and isolation decision.
